Pride of Ilocano Culture

Ilocos Sur is a beautiful province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. To show and share their treasures to the whole world, the locals conceived a festival that highlights these cultural traditions and they called it the “Kannadiwan Festival”.

Kannawidan is the biggest event in Ilocos Sur, and Vigan starts the festivities as early as January 28. The highlight every year is the Street Dancing and Dance Show Down . It ended with a blast as the twenty two lively and vibrant groups from the different towns compete. Each performance featured their respective One Town One Product (OTOP) and portrayed their culture, values, tradition, main products and tourist spots of their municipality. The town was filled with a festive atmosphere as the crowd yells for their own bet while the contingents performed gracefully and energetic in the tune of kannawidan song with their multi-colored costumes. And ofcourse the “Partuat ken Patanor” is always present, an local Ilocano terms for “crafts and crop”. The trade fair is an annual activity of Kannawidan Festival that highlights Ilocano products from different cities and municipalities of Ilocos Sur, guest exhibitors from different regions were also given the chance to sell their local products. The other ancestral cultural activities in the festival include the zarzuela show, traditional games and pallot or cock games.

Overall, the festival was very successful. For sure, everyone enjoyed it and will not forget the happiness it brings to us.
