War and peace are the two natural instincts of man. It is really a big problem that is getting bigger and bigger. Because man resorts to war to solve some problem or the other but when no solution is in sight, he yearns for peace. Until The United Nations came into being in 1945, following the devastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security.

The main object in establishing this new body was to save the succeeding generations from the scourge of war which had brought untold sorrow and misery to mankind during the two World Wars. The Charter came into force on 24th October, 1945. That is why 24th October is celebrated as the United Nations Day throughout the world.The purposes of the United Nations are spelt out in Article 1 of the U.N- Charter. These purposes are: (i) to maintain international peace and security- (ii) to develop friendly relations among nations, (iii) to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems, and (iv) to become a centre for Harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends. Since its creation, the UN has often been called upon to prevent disputes from escalating into war, or to help restore peace when armed conflict does break out, and to promote lasting peace in societies emerging from wars.

The UN plays a very important paper in the world. The UN prevent conflict; helping parties in conflict make peace; peacekeeping; and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. Over the decades, the UN has helped to end numerous conflicts,
